Game Film Evaluated:
Penn State (2013)
Michigan (2013)
Wisconsin (2014)

Pros: Capable of getting his hands under tackle and knock back with leverage. A bull rush which can generate some leverage and long arms. He has a burst when he goes straight ahead. Played a rover LB role vs Michigan. Potential to be OLB in 34 front. good arm extension vs Wisconsin OT, strong hands and good rip move. He’s got some fight to him. He has several good moves to beat a tackle once engaged. Showed an effective inside swim move vs Michigan State. He is a comfortable and effective pass rusher. He mostly played at weakside defensive end.

Cons: Plays RDE in Nebraska 4 man front.  Matched up vs Donovan Smith against Penn State.  Gets blown up by TE #18 consistently driven 3-5 yards back on run plays. Not the best or consistent tackler. Extremely disappointing performance vs Penn State. Not sure if due to ability of tackle or Gregory being just a guy. Saw no elite skils at all. He has no secondary pass rush. Got destroyed and wanted nothing to do with any run plays. Didn’t get any easier vs Michigan as he was matched up vs Titans 1st round pick Taylor Lewan. In 2013, reminded me  of Louisville Marcus Smith, a good athlete who makes plays aslong as he isn’t blocked or matched vs a RB in pass rush. Got Slow off the line, doesn’t get the great burst at the snap. Questionable effort level, rarely pursues plays outside his area. 1.5 tackles vs 53 Wisconsin run game snaps. He requires constant double teams in the passing game but he can be easily neutralized 1-1 in the run game.  Does not have a good inside, spin move to go with speed rush. This kid shows very little interest at times especially in the run game.

Summary: Randy Gregory is a talented pass rusher but he comes with some alarming red flags. I came with 2 major questions on Gregory.  Does he love football, the film suggest the answer is sometimes yes and other times no.  Can he stop the run, the film suggest he cannot and shows no desire to try to. He switched numbers from 44 to 4 as a senior and performed better in the passing game however at this point you cannot trust him to play full-time. He will perform well at the combine but the film tells me this is a pass rusher only who is not a self-starter and has major issues stopping the run.  He projects to be an outside linebacker in a 34 front, his run liability makes him a non fit for a 4-3. The film says a 2nd round pick but it would surprise me at all for a team desperate for a pass rusher to overlook his issues and grab him in the 1st.
