Film Evaluated:
Pros: Big
strong frame, able to withstand pressure in the pocket. Has a stromg arm to get
the ball downfield. He can deliver a strike when he does set his feet and step
into it. Shows an ability to progress in his reads, work the safety with his
eyes.
Cons: Offers
virtually no mobility to buy time in the pocket, he will take a lot of sacks.
Throws off back foot too much, needs to get footwork more involved. Doesn’t
step into his throws. His footwork is a mess when on the move and struggles
without a clean pocket. Consistently delivers a high ball across the middle.
Summary: Sean
Mannion reminds me of Drew Bledsoe, a statue in the pocket with a strong arm.
Mannion needs a clean pocket to deliver passes with high velocity with good
footwork. However he struggles dramatically when he gets pressured and he is
not an option to buy time in the pocket moving around. He has the body type to
absorb a lot of contact but needs to beat the blitz quicker to get teams out of
doing that. His footwork regresses dramatically with pressure and especially
when he tries to move. Better in 2013 than in 2014, intriguing prospect with
some upside but have to accept the sacks he will give up. I like his ability to
work under center and can progress through his reads on the field and look off
the safety. Similar to Tom Savage out of Pitt in 2013 and see Mannion as a
early 4th round pick.
