Game
Film Evaluated:
Pros: In
2014, played with good arm length and displayed strong hands. Showed an ability
to drop his shoulder and turn the corner on the tackle. He could rip and toss
the tackle aside to get pressure. Has a good burst off the snap but not elite.
Lined up in a down position and standing up as an OLB. Has a real burst to
close on the QB and finish the play. Plays with good awareness in the run game,
locates the ball well and pursues the action. He has a very effective swim move
to defeat blocks from TEs and OTs. He is undersized but defeats blocks fairly
consistently in the run game. A completely different player in 2014 from 2013.
He was able to disengage from blocks in the run game with relative ease coming
from the OLB position in their odd man front.
Cons: Disappointing
player in the same mold as Marcus Smith last year. A good athlete who is not a
good football player. He is not capable of shedding blocks or using any
technique to make plays with success. A late round player with talent but has a
long ways to go. Got taken advantage on several zone read plays being
indecisive in his responsibility.
Summary:
Mauldin went from a 5th round pick off 2013 to a Day II
pick and might even push his way into the 2nd round. The concern
will be what changed from 2013 to 2014, did the light turn on or was it money
as the primary motivator? He has good
upside capable of helping any team in the league displaying ability to rush the
passer standing up and with his hand on the ground. He was better than expected in the run game
and adds value as well. The lack of consistency is a concern and therefore he
grades out as a 3rd round prospect with the arrow pointing up. He
can help out right away in a 3-4 scheme but would need to add some bulk if he
goes to a 4-3.
