Film Evaluated:
LSU (2014)
Pros: Comfortable
safety playing in the box and off in coverage. Lined up few times as center
fielder in cover 1 responsibility. Has the capability to fill a hole with
authority and stuff a run whenever he makes contact. Not a head hunter, solid
form tackler. Potential playmaker, forced a fumble vs Tre Mason at Auburn . Capable of
getting to the deep half and making plays on the ball in cover 2 coverage. Can
time a blitz well and make plays behind the line. Made one handed pick vs Florida in centerfield
coverage. Good hip flexibility to change directions with ease in space. Capable
of making the open field tackle…Regular on ST units as a gunner.
Cons: Had
trouble in man coverage vs slot receivers going upfield. but will get a bit
flashy and go for the strip fumble instead. Can bite on playaction toward the
LOS when matched up in the box on run downs. Displays excellent form tackle
technique vs RBs but lowers the shoulder too much vs wrapping up against
receivers. Inconsistent tackler.
Summary:
Landon Collins is a better safety prospect than Mark Barron went to Tampa Bay
in the first round a few years ago.
Collins can make plays in coverage as the centerfielder and in deep half
responsibility as well as fill in hard against the run. While he may lack the
skills to match up vs receivers in man coverage, he has more than enough
ability to project into the top half of the first round. He slightly regressed as a tackler in 2014
and needs to be more consistent wrapping up the back vs going for the strip or
the big hit. Top 20 overall prospect.
