Game
Film Evaluated:
LSU (2014)
Pros: Hits
with power and authority. Good tackler. Excellent run defender. Gets good depth
on his drops in zone coverage. Reads the QB eyes and will fill holes in the
zone depending on where the QB eyes take him. A real thumper in the run game.
Cons: Tight
hips, heavy legs. Not light on his feet. Not agile in space. Does not win many
battles with blockers, would expect with his size/strength to win blocks with
lineman and receivers especially. Not someone who is comfortable with the ball
in the air, does not challenge the catch. Gets completely turned around in man
coverage vs receivers.
Summary: McKinney is a solid run
stuffing inside linebacker but is limited projecting him to the next level. He
will be a liability in coverage especially any instance he is put into man
situations. He simply does not have the hips or athleticism to keep up with
even runningbacks in coverage. He is not as good as a thumper as expected given
his size and strength, he should be able to take on blocks, shed them and make
the play but he doesn’t at this point. I project McKinney to a early 4th round
selection as a two-down run stuffing backer for either scheme but must have big
bodied protection in front of him.
