Film Evaluated:
Pros: Able
to avoid pressure and beat teams with his arm. Solid and impressive footwork
allowing him to put good zip on the ball. Throws a nice deep ball and gives his
receivers chance to run under it and away from defenders. He will stand tall in
the pocket and take the hit to get rid of a ball on target. Flashed ability to
throw with anticipation. Good athlete
who can run to buy time and take off for yards at times. He is comfortable
throwing it up in single coverage on a deep pass. He has that clock inside to
warn about pressure.
Cons: Up
tempo, spread offense. One read QB. Never worked under center nor had to call
plays. He needs to learn to slide to avoid unnecessary hits when he does run
downfield. He took some good hits vs West
Virginia . He can be late on and not throw with anticipation
on 15 yard out pattern. Gun shy throwing ball in tight spaces or when receivers
are covered.
Summary: Bryce
Petty has significant upside to the NFL but has to learn to work in a pro style
offense to succeed. He has not had any experience playing under center, making
presnap reads and calling the play. He has an advanced feel for the position,
the internal clock to avoid pressure, uses his feet to buy time and beat with
his arm and impressive footwork. He was used to throw into wide open receivers
in college and having defenses struggling to keep up with the tempo offense. He
will need time to develop those skills but has a chance to be a solid starting
QB in the NFL. 2nd round pick.
