Game
Film Evaluated:
Pros: Returns
kicks. Played a lot of press man in college. Comfortable getting physical with
receivers. Locates the ball and can make a play on it. Dynamic returner. Plays
ST as a gunner. He has adequate recovery speed if he misses at the line.
Effective tackler. Gives good effort and can bring the receiver down. Best on
short and intermediate routes.
Cons: Sometimes
he gets out muscled by bigger receivers. Needs to be more consistant looking
back for the ball and keep hands off the receiver downfield. He will line on
inside shoulder of receiver and gives outside release to receiver, struggles to
close that distance downfield.
Summary: D’Joun
Smith has some upside, its rare to find a corner who is already comfortable
jamming receivers at the line, plays a lot of ST units and is a dynamic kickoff
returner. This increases his value significantly to make a team as a nickel
corner and top ST player in the NFL. Smith can play either coverage but seems
most comfortable in zone or press man with safety help. I project Smith as a
mid 3rd round pick who can make a team and fill a variety of roles
to compete for a starting job by his 2nd season.
