2017 NFL Draft Reports - Inside Linebackers

INSIDE LINEBACKERS

Zach Cunningham, Vanderbilt, #41

Game Film Evaluated:
Georgia (2016)
Missouri (2016)
South Carolina (2016)

Summary: He can really run and impressive length, ideal frame for the mike position. He can take on blockers and get off blocks effectively. He can convert speed to power and give a good pop on contact with blockers in the hole. He really attacks the action, will be out of position and needs to play a bit more under control. He will take a few false steps and come up with nothing, he runs himself out of position and will miss the tackle as the result. He can really explode into the backfield and absolutely stuff a runner right in his tracks and go no further. He has more than enough speed to keep up with backs and has the height to match up with tight ends as well. Zach Cunningham is a rare complete middle linebacker who has the size to handle blockers inside, athleticism to run and chase down plays in both the run and passing game. He is a high potential player but he has some red flags with his average awareness on the field to find the ball and misses too many tackles but he will make a lot of impact plays behind the LOS and not require protection inside from the tackles. 1st round grade but he needs to work hard in the film room and improve his tackling to meet his potential.

Raekwon McMillan, Ohio State, #5

Game Film Evaluated:
Penn State (2016)
Clemson (2016)
Wisconsin (2016)
Michigan (2016)

Summary: Very good athlete, ideal frame for the position. Good speed and has the athleticism to be able to cover backs and tight ends. Average recognition on the field, out of position way too often and. He does not play with plus instincts, does not locate the ball quickly at the snap. Takes poor angles and finds himself chasing the play. He has good length to project he can keep blockers but he does not know how to get off blocks when lineman get to him. He flashes some playmaking ability, when he has a clear path to the ball he can explode into the backfield and make a splash play. Raekwon McMillan is a projection player, there is a lot of potential and talent just waiting to be unlocked. He has the frame, strength, speed to be a plus impact linebacker but he does not consistently bring that aggressive, attack style to the game. He gets blown out of the hole by fullbacks and lineman. He struggles to find the ball quickly through traffic and cannot get off blocks. He would be better as a weakside LB but he has the talent to stay in the middle but has got to improve his technique, recognition skill and learn to attack the action more often. He plays like a 4th round pick but flashes day one ability, I will settle for a 3rd round grade.

Kendell Beckwith, LSU, #52

Game Film Evaluated:
Wisconsin (2016)
Mississippi State (2016)

Summary: Ideal frame with good speed, he can backpedal smooth and should be a plus defender in coverage. Passive defender, he is not aggressive at all and is rarely the first player to the scene. He has the strength to take on blockers and get off those blocks but he is not consistent. He does not quickly locate the ball, attack the gaps or pursue the ball quickly. Tentative but talented is best way to describe him. Kendell Beckwith is a highly talented linebacker with some severe red flags. He brings ideal frame and some plus athleticism who is capable of taking on blockers and hitting with authority. However he is not consistent and plays much more tentative than someone of his talent should. He fails to locate the ball and read the play quickly, he finds himself out of position and often a passenger to the play. His motor runs cold and does not pursue plays outside of his area. He is a high risk player who could pay off if he improves his on field awareness and becomes much more aggressive type player. 4th round grade.

Harvey Langi, BYU, #21

Game Film Evaluated:
Utah (2015)

Summary: He can really move, impressive burst and he can close on the ball with speed. He has good frame for the position and can bring some power. He can take on blocks and flashed ability to get off blocks at times to find the ball and finish the play. He has some pass rush upside as a blitzer and may be a fit for a 3-4 team. Harvey Langi has the frame, speed and some athletic ability to be a player as a inside backer in the 3-4. He can really attack the ball and looks to shoot gaps and attack the action at the LOS consistently. He isn’t someone who can get off blocks quickly, needs to improve his technique to take on and disengage to become a starter at the next level. He has good speed to make plays on the outside. He has some tools but isn’t a polished product, he needs to go to a 3-4 team that has a thumper and a stout nose tackle that wants big linebackers who can really run and Langi can do that. 4th round grade.
