Evaluating Joseph Randle vs Giants

Dallas ran the ball for a 3.5 average yards per carry in Week 1 vs the Giants.  This was by far their lowest rush production in a year.

The discussion on whether Joseph Randle can be a solid back in the NFL remains unanswered but there are some bullet points that should be highlighted.

  • This offensive line is still really good.  LT Tyron Smith absolutely destroys the SAM backer for NY.  Travis Frederick knocks out the Mike as well getting downfield.

  • Joseph Randle can find the hole in both zone and angle blocking schemes.  Randle had most of his runs in 2014 come on zone stretch plays but he would have to get positive yardage in a variety of run plays to be the lead back.  I like his patience and vision to follow Clutts for a good gain.

  • Randle struggles to break tackles.  The offensive line gives him a hole on the left side but he can't shake off the tackle inside.  This separates a 4 yard run from a 10 plus yard run.  Frederick could of done better getting his man but that would of meant a likely holding penalty.  An NFL starting back has to be able to break some tackles.

  •  Randle for the most part makes the correct read off his blocks.  I counted only 2 missed reads on his carries but this could of been a big play instead of a 3 yard gain.  The Giants stacked the line and only the safety was left if Randle gets past it.  He should of run off the right shoulder of Terrence Williams (#83) to get into he secondary.  Instead he runs right into the defenders.
