Game Film Evaluated:
Clemson (2014)
South Carolina (2014)
Tennessee (2014)

Pros: Really comfortable catching the football…an effective option on screens, catches the ball with hands. Absorbs contact and keeps moving forward. Stops on a dime and accelerates quickly. It is very hard to get him down 1 on 1 in space. He has strong stiff arm and top lateral quickness to side step tacklers. Looks to punish defenders instead of going out of bounds. Explodes through holes, top level burst. He will put his head down and take the hard 2-3 yards inside. Impressive balance and leg strength to break tackles and forward lean after contact. Reads his blocks well, shows some patience to set them up.

Cons: Lets rushers get into his body too much, needs to use his arms better in protection, loses all leverage which shouldn’t happen with someone as strong as Gurley. He got bulldozed by blitzer because of this vs Tennessee, 2Q at 2:51 mark but then got up and looked to hit that blitzer who got him. Has lot to work on in pass protection to be trusted to handle blitz assignments. Leaves his feet to jump over lineman inside, makes him vulnerable to big hits. Did not change hands with the ball when running outside but does keep ball high and tight.

Summary: An elite back who will deliver lots of big runs, catch a lot of passes but has a great deal of work to do to protect his QB. Suspended 4 games from trying to get money for his own autographs. Tore ACL vs Auburn in left knee. *Medical Alert*. If it wasn’t for the injury, Gurley would the top back available and a first round prospect. Need to revisit after the combine for the medical check on the knee. Even if it checks out on schedule, Gurley is a liability in pass protection at this point and he will likely fall behind in camp due to the rehab. He projects as a 1st round pick who could quickly move up if a team can’t resist the temptation.
