Good start to offseason

With reports of Rob Ryan being offered the Cowboys D coordinator job and Jerry Jones completing his bullcrap of a head coaching search, have to say impressed with how things have gone thus far.

Unlike most cowboy players & coaches, Jason Garrett earned his promotion to head coach with an impressive finish to a dreadful season. The fact you can see a direct turn around from 1-7 to 5-3 is mind boggling in the modern NFL. The real mystery is whether or not this team turned it around due to Garrett or to the fact Jerry Jones came to the realization that his team sucked and he was willing to clean house.

Under Garrett, the offense improved its consistency but its weaknesses continued toward the end, offensive line and short-yardage running.

The defensive performance was easy and literally true, the worst cowboys defensive unit in the franchises' history. The unit gave up more points than any other previous team in the club's 50 year history. The poor play in the secondary continued, Mike Jenkin's rollercoaster of a career and failure to get offenses off the field on 3rd down. The pass rush disappeared, Anthony Spencer seemed to rush the passer in the ways of Roy Williams' the safety in years past, run into the lineman and make no effort to get around them.

Although the unit does deserve credit for a drastic turnaround in forcing turnovers after the coaching change. Seemed the unit playing in more zone coverage were able to locate the ball better and not drop it. Newman seemed to cut down on his team leading interception drops in a season.

Rob Ryan will inherit a "talented" group on defense with the best pass rusher he's ever had in his 7 year coaching career as defensive coordinator. Jones & Garrett will need to upgrade the defensive unit, adding a legit secondary pass rusher as Spencer has had one good season with four average, the verdict is clear. A few decisions in the secondary need to be made, is Newman worth bringing back for 8 million? Should Mike Jenkins be cut or do you bring back Gerald Sensabaugh?

Can't tell me this makes sense

There is always sense of curiousity when the NFL announces the final cut down to 53, fans of every team question every move while the coaches/gm's say publicly we feel good about our team.

The truth is no one knows who has a good team yet but it's always fun to speculate. As a die hard cowboy fan, I want to get after my cowboys.

Before we go into each position, let's clarify one point in that is this process about putting the best football team together or the best financially smart football team. I can go with the idea of putting together the best football team as its easy to spend someone else's millions.

Quarterback was no decision here, the only real battle was for Stephen McGee's job who earned the roster spot with a 300 plus yard performance against the Dolphins in the final worthless preseason game. Jon Kitna is not going to come back next year with his age and I'm still not sold on McGee's ability so I'm all for scouting the middle rounds for a quarterback next year. Sure would like to have Matt Moore, regret that decision JJ?

Runningback is utter dysfunctional with this team, the most complete back is last on the depth chart, the most explosive runner is not starting while the starter has failed the beat up defenses as those had hoped. Here's how it should be, Felix Jones is your starter averaging 10-15 carrries per game, Tashard Choice is the 3rd down back, primary backup getting all snaps in place of Jones while Marion Barber is the backup to both. The logic is putting these players in the best position to make plays and simple thinking...Jones is your best runner so he starts, Choice is the best all around back so he needs to be the first available off the bench as well as your best short yardage runner. Finally Barber is a powerful inside runner who needs to stay fresh, focus more on running to daylight instead of into contact.

No one cares about the fullback but they are worthy of a sentence or two. Only reason Deon Anderson makes this team is because John Phillips got hurt and Chris Gronkowski failed to beat him out of the job. I doubt Anderson makes it the entire season.

Behind runningback and cornerback which we will get into later, wide receiver is the next on my dysfunctional position list for this team. Miles Austin is fine as long as he stay away from the drops which happened too often in the preseason but should show he's Romo's #1 target for good. Roy Williams should not have made this team if we are talking about on field performance but with this team, we are not using that logic. Williams made this team because of JJ pure and simple, it was not money that earned him the job this year but JJ's ego only. No one likes to admit a mistake but I would gladly admit to a mistake if I can fix it and win a championship just despite. Unfortunately because of Roy making this team, Patrick Crayton is off and shipped to the San Diego Chargers for just a 7th round pick (his original draft selection).  Gone is Romo's 2nd most trusted offensive weapon, gone is your most durable receiver over the past 3 years and gone was the most consistent receiver aside from Jason Witten under Romo's watch. Do not buy this crap that Crayton was let go because he would of taken up snaps from Kevin Ogletree, that had nothing to do with it. Crayton was let go to make room for Roy Williams to continue to start as Dez Bryant & Kevin Ogletree were going to make this team period. The only receiver who was truly fighting for his job was Sam Hurd who showed up and earned the roster spot. Only way Crayton would of made this team was if one of the top four receivers suffered a significant injury into the regular season.
